Johan Agebjorn is the man behind Sally Shapiro’s very cool and much praised album Disco Romance. Spacer Woman From Mars was originally intended for Disco Romance, but was left off because they thought it didn’t quite fit the rest of the material. The track will be included in a Lo Recordings release titled Milky Disco, due out September 17th.

side of the day=Taken By Trees + The Tough Alliance August 30, 2007

taken by trees

Sweden’s The Tough Alliance hit the US scene this summer, floating around blogs with records still only available on import. When you dig a little deeper into the alliance, you find bat swinging stage shows and a obscure hooliganistic demeanor. Whatever that is all about, they’ve found the secret sauce for the Swedish indie-scene and have caught attention in the states. TTA’s remix of Taken Too Young adds warm elecro-tropical air to ex-Concretes singer Victoria Bergsman’s solo project, Taken By Trees.

Radiohead is expected to release their next album in early 2008, but at least one track, Arpeggi, has been floating about. I am intrigued by the direction they are going with this track, embracing a sound that is more familiar in the world of classical minimalist compositions; Steve Reich’s New York Counterpoint comes to mind, and a little of Benjamin Britten’s Now the Great Bear and Pleiades for a vocal line. These are loose associations, maybe not helpful, but this definitely sounds like some sort of departure.

Close Your Eyes-We Are Blind wanders delightfully. New Mexico’s Brandon Bethancourt, with friends in tow, creates an isolated village, with nothing to do at night but play with accordians and synthesizers. Alaska In Winter is on tour with Beirut this fall (of whom this track shares a contributer). Myspace link is below for more streaming and order info.

Grovesnor is everything that I want to hear from male singers today. I want them to channel their inner Lionel Richie, or their inner Aaron Neville; I know its in you. Grovesnor is former Hot Chip drummer Rob Smoughton. Nightmoves is out now on Hi-Beat as a split 7″ with Wallflowers. Video to Wallflowers below.

LA based Earlimart released Mentor Tormentor this week through Majordomo, the band’s imprint with Shout! Factory. Todays favoured side, Answers and Questions, is simple straight-up no umbrella pop. Here is a link to their excellent set on Morning Becomes Eclectic this week. Also see Happy Alone below.

Formed by picking be best of the best of ex-Azure Ray’s singer songwriter Orenda Finks tour-mates, Art In Manila is a indie supergroup of sorts. They released their debut album Set The Woods On Fire earlier this month on Saddle Creek Records. The Sweat Descends is a little more frantic than some of the other songs sampled below. The hooks are in the undertow; and in the dive-bar drive. Art In Manila will be on tour this fall with bands Rilo Kiley and The Good Life.

Ambiant-electro artist Darrell Fitton released his latest album Kroungrine on Manchester’s Skam Records earlier this summer. Todays track, Waknuts, pulls you along slowly, gently guiding you through its mellow hooks. Skam will release Kroungrine on vinyl in early September, you can find Skam’s site linked below.

Not much is known yet about a girl named Laura Sue (Goetz?/something else?) or her project called Golden Ghost. The whole thing is a little bit confusing, but in good way, the confusing way these things sometimes are. I love these little lo-fi projects that one might be lucky enough to stumble upon some open mike. This find sparkles.
